Established in 1981, Chicago Women in Trades (CWIT) has been the leading advocate for women seeking to enter and thrive in nontraditional occupations, leading the charge for equal opportunity and advancement in industries historically dominated by men.


The true spirit of CWIT lies in the determination and resilience of the founding tradeswomen who refused to accept the status quo. From challenging discriminatory hiring practices and advocating for safe workplaces, the unwavering commitment of CWIT’s tradeswomen has opened doors and changed lives.

CWIT continues to dismantle barriers and build bridges through its comprehensive training programs, strategic policy initiatives and vital industry support. CWIT’s diverse coalition of tradeswomen, industry allies, and advocates is committed to reshaping the landscape of skilled labor.

CWIT’s mission will not be fulfilled until gender is not a barrier to success in any occupation, where worksites reflect the full diversity of our communities, and where tradeswomen are given the same opportunities as their male counterparts.
